'All I heard was gunshots': Woman speaks on deadly Sofas Street shooting
IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- Theresa Jones had just walked into her home Sunday night on Sofas Street when the bullets started to fly.
"I had just walked off my porch and came back in my house to finish doing my work and all I heard was gunshots," Jones said.
New Iberia police were at the scene of the shooting at around 9:15 p.m., authorities said. Responding officers found three victims - two female and one male.
Two of the shooting victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The Iberia Parish Coroner said those two victims are 31-year-old Dewanna Broussard and 36-year-old Kasey Egbi, both of New Iberia.
The surviving victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. She was later released from hospital care, authorities said.
Neighbors said the man who was shot was shielding the wounded victim during the gunfire, crediting him for the reason the third victim survived.
Jones and other residents on Sofas Street said Broussard and Egbi were considered as family to everyone who lived in the area.
Jones pleads for help to bring peace to the New Iberia community.
"It's a shame to watch individuals yearly have to go through the mourning and the loss of a loved one on the kind of another or individuals that decide they don't want this person to live so they got the right to take their life. No y'all don't," Jones said.
The shooting remains under investigation.
