Deputy minister for EU affairs briefs MEPs ahead of Cyprus’ presidency

Deputy Minister for EU Affairs Marilena Raouna met with Cypriot MEPs ahead of the Cyprus EU Presidency for the first half of 2026.

Raouna and the MEPs on Monday discussed the effective promotion of the legislative work of the EU to take place during the rotating presidency which Cyprus will hold with Poland and Denmark, a press release said.

The deputy minister said that during consultations with the presidency trio, the Republic had highlighted issues pertaining to the management of the migration crisis, EU relations with the Middle East and Gulf countries, maritime security, connectivity and support of the economy’s primary sector.

Moreover, during its presidency, Cyprus will tackle the new multiannual financial framework and a review of the EU’s common agricultural policy.

Raouna and the MEPs discussed ways to strengthen relations with the European Parliament to which end the deputy minister will hold contacts in upcoming months.

She underscored that that assuming the presidency is a national mission, requiring close and constructive cooperation with the common goal being its far-reaching and successful execution.

MEP Fidias Panayiotou did not attend the meeting due to other commitments.

Cyprus joined the EU in 2004 and in 2012 it assumed the EU presidency for the first time. It elects six MEPs.
