Afghanistan rejects US-Uzbekistan deal on former Government Aircraft
The Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan has responded to the U.S.-Uzbekistan agreement on the former government’s aircraft, calling the decision unacceptable.
In a statement released Tuesday, September 6, the Ministry demanded that Uzbekistan transfer the former government’s aircraft to Afghanistan, contrary to the agreement with the U.S.
The statement reads: “Any deal regarding the fate of Afghanistan’s helicopters and planes in Uzbekistan is unacceptable.”
This comes as Jonathan Henick, the U.S. Ambassador in Tashkent, announced the agreement with Uzbekistan about the fate of the former Afghanistan military aircraft, claiming they belong to Washington.
Henick said, “These aircraft never belonged to the Afghans; the U.S. owned them. The Afghanistan military used them, but ownership always remained with the U.S.”
Under the Washington-Tashkent agreement, the aircraft of the former Afghanistan government will remain in Uzbekistan.
In response, the Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan has deemed the agreement “unacceptable” and requested Uzbekistan to cooperate in handing over the Afghan Air Force aircraft to the Taliban administration, emphasizing the importance of “neighborly relations.”
As the situation develops, it remains crucial for all parties involved to address these concerns diplomatically and work towards a solution that respects regional dynamics and international agreements.
