‘Disgraceful choice’ rage fuming Corrie fans as soap writers are slammed for Deirdre Barlow plot
CORONATION Street fans have been left fuming over the soap’s “disrespectful” ongoing cult storyline.
The latest development has seen evil cult leader Rowan Cunliffe (Emrhys Cooper) try to get his hands on Amy Barlow’s (Elle Mulvaney) inheritance.
Amy is planning to give all her inheritance to villainous cult leader Rowan[/caption]Amy’s grandmother Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride) left her a significant inheritance following her 2014 death, but Coronation viewers have watched as Rowan and Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) have convinced her to invest the money in The Altovalent Institute.
As soap viewers know that Rowan is scamming the residents of Weatherfield with his cult, with Amy as his latest victim.
Corrie fans have been left absolutely outraged at the latest development in this storyline as they believe it’s “disrespectful” to Diedre’s memory for the money to be frittered away like this.
Voicing their disapproval on X, formerly Twitter, one viewer slammed the soap writers for taking Amy down this path.
“Can’t believe the Corrie writers and producers think it’s acceptable to disrespect the amazing, iconic and legendary Deirdre Barlow by making the will she left for her granddaughter who she loved so much be flogged off to a random cult, disgraceful choice!” they wrote.
Another viewer agreed that the storyline is “abysmal,” while a third moaned: “Deirdre is a legend of Corrie, she deserves better than this!”
When another viewer pointed out that the soap is fiction, a fourth outraged fan replied: “Not the point, it’s still disrespectful to a beloved character and the actor Anne Kirkbride who worked hard playing the fantastic role.”
Other viewers agreed that had Diedre still been alive, she wouldn’t allow Rowan to take advantage of her granddaughter.
“I bet Deirdre regretted [giving her the money] afterwards, she wouldn’t want Amy falling for this,” said one ITV fan.
While another agreed: “Deidre would have been onto it in a minute! I can just see her tearing a strip off Amy… then seeing Rowan off in a heartbeat!”
Unfortunately, with the pressure she faces from Rowan and Leanne to invest, Amy seems set on giving her money away to the Institute, even after Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain) warns her not to risk her inheritance.
Aadi convinced Amy to ask Rowan further questions about how she will get her money back.
He also warned her not to trust him, but Amy insists she can trust Leanne.
And Rowan continues to pressure Amy.
Most complained about soap storylines
Over the years, all three of the main soaps have featured plots that have had even die-hard fans reaching for their phones and laptops so they can get in touch with Ofcom and complain. Here are just some of the most scandalous…
Rowan tells Amy that it isn’t too late to invest in the new resource centre if she changes her mind.
Fed up of being left alone to run the bistro, Amy then tells Nick (Ben Price) she should have listened to Rowan and is quitting.
Rowan’s delighted and arranges an upload session for Amy.
With Amy’s mum, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) making a return to the cobbles, can she help save her from Rowan and The Institute?
