What is the noisiest holiday in NYC? See how Labor Day weekend compares
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – New York City is never really quiet, but some holidays inspire an exceptional amount of noise-inspired rage.
On average, 968 New Yorkers called 311 every day last year to complain about loud music and partying at homes, bars, and on the streets. But on holidays, that number significantly spikes.
Over the last three years, the Fourth of July prompted an average of 3,628 noise complaints in a single day, most of which involved street and sidewalk nuisances, according to 311 data. Possibly the loudest Fourth of July in recent years was 2022, when over 4,300 New Yorkers dialed 311 to share their woes.
And there’s no Fourth of July without fireworks. In 2023, 2,623 people complained of illegal fireworks at New York City residences, the data show. This year, 2,678 people reported illegal fireworks.
Memorial Day was the second-loudest holiday over the past few years, prompting an average of 2,984 noise complaint calls to 311. Unlike July’s complaints, the Memorial Day calls focused on parties and loud music at residences.
Labor Day followed just behind; over the past three years, an average of 2,556 calls reported partying, most of which were residential.
When considering the entire holiday weekend, Memorial Day jumps ahead of the Fourth of July as the loudest long weekend in the city, 311 data show.
Quieter holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, garnered noise complaints only in the hundreds.
