The best toothbrushes for healthy gums and teeth, tested and reviewed

0

Imagine a tool so essential to your daily routine that it influences your overall health and well-being. Your toothbrush fits this description perfectly. But not all toothbrushes are created equal. Choosing the best toothbrush can make a significant difference in your dental health.

Chelsea Perry, DMD, founder of Elite Dental Studio in Westborough, Mass., emphasizes the importance of selecting a toothbrush with "bristles that are firm enough to clean effectively but soft enough to avoid damage." Additionally, she points out that "the handle should be comfortable to hold and maneuver." When it comes to electric toothbrushes, Perry advises looking for features like a timer to ensure you're brushing for the recommended two minutes and pressure sensors to prevent brushing too hard.

With so many toothbrushes available, it's tempting to grab the nearest one, but making an informed choice can significantly impact your oral health. To make the process a little easier, we did the legwork for you. First, we consulted with dental professionals, oral hygienists and American Dental Association (ADA) members to determine what to look for in a high-quality toothbrush. Furthermore, we carefully examined user feedback and rigorously tested every toothbrush featured here, along with several others that were not included.

Continue reading to discover the best toothbrushes for every need — whether you're searching for electric or manual brushes, options for kids or travel-friendly versions or you're looking for something more sustainable, we've got you covered.

Maintaining good oral hygiene starts with choosing the right toothbrush. Each type has distinct features and benefits, making it essential to find one that suits your specific needs.

A manual toothbrush has a bristled head attached to a wooden or plastic handle. You brush your teeth using circular motions as you guide the tool yourself. It allows for precise control over pressure and placement.

People often favor manual toothbrushes due to their quiet operation, lack of charging requirements and portability.

Equipped with self-oscillating or rotating bristles, electric toothbrushes deliver a thorough cleaning experience. They are pricier than manual toothbrushes, but their superior plaque removal and enhanced accuracy and timing make them a worthwhile investment.

"About half of the patients I see in my practice don't brush their gum line well, and this is where the electric toothbrush plays a big role in improving their oral health," says Priya Mistry, DDS, The TMJ Doc in Vancouver, Wash.

There are several types of electric toothbrushes, each with unique features:

  • Sonic toothbrushes: These employ high-frequency vibrations to clean teeth, creating continuous waves of motion that effectively dislodge debris and plaque.

  • Oscillating-rotating toothbrushes: With bristles that move back and forth in a sweeping motion, propelled by a motor, these toothbrushes thoroughly clean teeth and gums. A 2022 study noted a "small but significant difference" in the efficacy of oscillating-rotating toothbrushes compared to sonic toothbrushes.

  • Ultrasonic toothbrushes: These operate at frequencies even higher than sonic toothbrushes, making them ideal for those who need extra help with plaque removal, stains and other dental issues.

Not all toothbrushes are created equal, and selecting a model that suits your specific needs is crucial for optimal oral health. Here are some specialized options:

  • For braces: "If you have braces, you'll want a toothbrush that can navigate around the brackets and wires. A toothbrush with V-shaped bristles, designed specifically for orthodontic patients, can help clean around braces more efficiently. Electric toothbrushes with orthodontic heads can also be very effective,” says Perry.

  • For sensitive teeth: Perry advises, "People with sensitive teeth should also opt for soft-bristled brushes. Some toothbrushes come with extra-soft bristles designed to be gentle on both teeth and gums. It's important to avoid anything too abrasive that might exacerbate sensitivity."

  • For kids: According to pediatric dentist Paul Allen, DDS, from All Kids Dental Pediatric and Orthodontics in Rifle, Colo., there are several features to look for in kid toothbrushes: a small head and soft bristles, which are suitable for smaller mouths and gentle on gums; fun and engaging designs or characters to encourage regular brushing; and timers to help ensure that they brush for the recommended two minutes.

With so many options on the market, selecting the best toothbrush for your needs can be overwhelming. "Make sure that your new toothbrush feels right for you. It should feel comfortable in your hands. It should be easy to manipulate, and enable you to reach difficult areas in the back of your mouth," advises Joshua Perlman, DDS at NYC Smile Spa.

Here are other key factors to consider when making your decision:

"Soft bristles are gentle on the gums and teeth, minimizing the risk of abrasion and irritation. Hard-bristled toothbrushes can be too harsh on the enamel and gums, potentially causing damage and recession over time," says Joyce Kahng, a cosmetic dentist at Orange and Magnolia Dental Studio in Costa Mesa, Calif. However, she explains there may be specific situations where a dentist may recommend a brush with harder bristles. For instance, for cleaning dentures or other dental appliances. "It's essential to consult your dentist for personalized advice regarding the firmness level that suits your oral health needs," Kahng says.

"A good toothbrush should have the right-sized head to fit your mouth. Smaller mouths need a smaller head while larger ones need a bigger head," says Jordan Albino, DDS, a dentist at Kids Dental Studio in Ontario, Canada.

According to the ADA, both manual and electric toothbrushes can clean effectively when used correctly. However, manual brushes require proper technique to achieve optimal results.

Electric toothbrushes offer features like built-in timers, which help ensure you brush for the recommended duration and cover all areas of your mouth, reducing the margin for error. "I have found that many patients do a better job with an electric toothbrush when compared to a manual brush," says Perlman.

If you can maintain a consistent brushing regimen without the aids provided by electric toothbrushes, a manual brush can be just as effective.

ADA-approved manual and electric toothbrushes are available for purchase online.

When choosing a toothbrush, consider these extra features:

  • Timers: You should brush your teeth twice daily for at least two minutes. Timers help ensure you meet this guideline, making it easier to maintain proper oral hygiene.

  • Pressure sensors: Applying more pressure doesn't mean a better clean. Quite the contrary! Too much pressure can harm your gums and teeth and cause your toothbrush to wear out quickly. Many electric toothbrushes come with built-in pressure sensors that alert you if you're brushing too hard, helping to protect your oral health.

  • Cleaning modes: Some electric toothbrushes offer multiple cleaning modes, such as a gum-massaging mode, to accommodate different needs.

"On average, you can spend around $5 to $10 on a manual toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes, which offer additional benefits like oscillating or rotating bristles, can range from $20 to $200. Remember that investing in a good toothbrush is worthwhile for maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing dental problems in the long run," says Kahng.

When budgeting for a toothbrush, factor in not only the initial purchase price but also the long-term benefits and costs.

Electric toothbrushes, despite their higher upfront cost, often come with replaceable heads and rechargeable batteries, which can extend their lifespan and reduce ongoing expenses. Additionally, the enhanced cleaning capabilities of electric toothbrushes can lead to better oral health and less costly dental visits, making them a smart investment.

"The number one thing you should look for in a good toothbrush is that it has the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This will let you know that the toothbrush has been tested for safety and efficacy," says Collin Bowerman, chief dental officer at Risas Dental and Braces in Gilbert, Ariz.

When a toothbrush carries the ADA Seal, it's an important indicator of quality and reliability, giving consumers confidence in their purchase.

First things first, writing this article meant a lot of toothbrushing! I received sample toothbrushes from a range of companies to test out many of the models available on the market.

My family and I tested each brush, taking notes on efficiency, ease of use and distinctive features. I also considered pricing and consumer feedback.

To ensure a well-rounded review, I heavily relied on expert opinions from the ADA and dentists. I researched the latest studies and findings from the ADA to weigh the pros and cons of each toothbrush.

Selecting the best toothbrush for your needs involves considering several factors. "You want a toothbrush that fits your unique needs. If surface staining and plaque removal are your primary focus, find a toothbrush with an oscillating head," suggests Khan. Oscillating heads excel at dislodging surface stains and plaque, making them ideal for those aiming for a brighter smile.

Gingival recession requires a more specialized approach. "You want a toothbrush that uses sonic waves (vibrations) to break off food or plaque at the gum line and has a pressure sensor to prevent further gingival damage," Khan explains. Sonic toothbrushes are designed to be gentle on your gums while effectively cleaning your teeth.

Comfort is paramount when using a toothbrush, and different settings can make a significant difference. Khan recommends trying various modes if the vibration feels uncomfortable or awkward. This flexibility can help you find the most comfortable brushing experience.

For individuals who brush too quickly, a toothbrush with a two-minute timer is essential. "If you are a speedy brusher, you may need a brush with a two-minute timer," says Khan. This feature ensures you spend adequate time brushing, improving overall oral hygiene.

The size of the toothbrush head also plays a crucial role. "Pay attention to the size of the toothbrush head," advises Khan. "A larger toothbrush head may look appealing, but it may be more difficult to maneuver in your mouth. A smaller toothbrush head can get around the back of your molar teeth more easily and do a better job cleaning your teeth." Smaller heads provide better access to hard-to-reach areas, ensuring a thorough clean.

According to the ADA, you should replace your toothbrush every 3 or 4 months, or as soon as the bristles start to fray or become matted.

It's also important to swap out your toothbrush after recovering from an illness to avoid spreading germs and maintain good oral health.

The terms soft, medium and hard refer to the firmness of toothbrush bristles. According to Khan, most dentists recommend soft toothbrushes, although some people prefer the feel of medium or hard bristles.

"When it comes to bristle type, soft is the way to go. Soft bristles are recommended as they are gentle on enamel and help prevent gum recession. They effectively remove plaque without causing harm to your gums," says Khan. Soft bristles are especially suitable for people with sensitive teeth and gums, providing a thorough clean while minimizing the risk of damage.

Medium and hard bristles, while available, come with a caveat. "Medium and hard bristles carry a higher risk of damaging gum tissue and thinning it out," Khan explains. These bristles can be too abrasive, leading to enamel erosion and gum recession over time. Despite these risks, medium- and hard-bristle brushes are available mainly due to consumer preference. Some believe these firmer bristles offer a deeper clean, but they can do more harm than good if not used properly.

It's important to note that a toothbrush's effectiveness is not solely determined by bristle firmness. Proper brushing technique and brushing for the recommended two minutes twice a day play crucial roles in maintaining oral health. The ADA advises using gentle, circular motions to clean all surfaces of the teeth and to avoid brushing too hard, regardless of the bristle type.

For those who prefer the feel of medium or hard bristles, it might be worth consulting with a dentist to ensure they are not harming their teeth and gums. A dentist can provide personalized recommendations based on individual oral health needs.

Electric toothbrushes leave less room for user error, which means most people benefit from their use. That said, manual toothbrushes can be perfectly effective as long as you use them correctly and brush for a sufficient period of time.

"Electric toothbrushes have gained popularity due to their advanced features. The key advantage of electric toothbrushes is their oscillating, rotating and pulsating technology, which replicates the motions needed for thorough cleaning," says Khan. "They often come with a built-in two-minute timer, different modes and dentist-inspired brush heads. Electric toothbrushes are especially beneficial for individuals with dexterity issues, weak grip or arthritis. However, some people prefer traditional toothbrushes due to the tactile feel and lower cost."

Electric toothbrushes often feature various cleaning modes, such as gum care, sensitive and whitening, allowing users to tailor their brushing experience to their specific needs. The built-in timers help ensure you brush for the dentist-recommended two minutes, which is crucial for maintaining good oral hygiene.

Despite these benefits, some people prefer manual toothbrushes for their simplicity and lower cost. Manual toothbrushes are also more portable, requiring no batteries or charging, making them convenient for travel.

Ultimately, the choice between an electric and a manual toothbrush comes down to personal preference and individual needs. Both types can be effective if used correctly. Proper brushing technique is essential regardless of the type of toothbrush used.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance signifies that a company has provided scientific evidence demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of its product. The ADA rigorously investigates this evidence to verify the product's claims.

When you see the ADA Seal on a toothbrush or other dental product, it assures you that it meets high standards and is likely to perform effectively. More than 200 dental products have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance, indicating their endorsement by dental experts for quality and reliability.

Ordo is a UK-based company that produces a no-fuss, reasonably priced electric toothbrush. When I pulled it out of the box, I noticed a few errant bristles, and upon reading reviews, I found that shedding was a common problem.

There wasn’t anything inherently wrong with SuperMouth’s electric kids' toothbrush. It worked well, and my child seemed to enjoy it. The Philips Sonicare version was slightly better and had more favorable reviews, cementing its top spot on this list.

While the Quip is a reasonable price, it felt flimsy, almost like it wouldn’t last long. After reading the reviews, I found that many users reported that the brush heads wore out quickly.
