Pakistan halts 2,000 Afghan trucks at border, causing major trade losses
The Embassy of Afghanistan in Islamabad has reported the halt of nearly 2,000 Afghan trucks carrying fruits and vegetables on the Peshawar-Torkham route, stating that this blockade has been in effect for about a week.
The embassy posted late Wednesday, August 28th, on the social media platform X, noting that the suspension of trucks transporting fresh produce has caused millions of dollars in losses to Afghan traders.
According to the embassy, the Peshawar-Torkham road in the Bagyari area has been closed for over a week, stranding at least 2,000 trucks on the route from Torkham to Peshawar.
The Afghan embassy in Islamabad stated that they have repeatedly raised the issue with Pakistani officials and authorities, who have promised a swift resolution, but no progress has been made so far.
Border crossings along the Durand Line have been blocked several times over the past three years, prompting the formation of a commission by both the Taliban officials and the Pakistani government to prevent future occurrences. Despite this, the disruptions continue.
The recent announcement of the second phase of Afghan refugees’ repatriation by Pakistan, combined with increased insecurity and ongoing border issues, has further strained relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The continued blockages and lack of resolution exacerbate tensions, impacting trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
