Vikings sign former Bears QB Brett Rypien

0

Brett Rypien found himself a 53-man roster spot.

The Vikings signed the former Bears quarterback on Thursday, waiving quarterback Jaren Hall to make room for him.

The Bears cut Rypien on Tuesday after he posted one of the best exhibition seasons in the NFL. He posted a 131.4 passer rating in the preseason, but was firmly entrenched as the team's No. 3 quarterback. The Bears brought back the No. 4, undrafted rookie Austin Reed, to the practice squad.

The Vikings shuffled their quarterback room after a traumatic preseason that saw J.J. McCarthy, their first-round pick, be ruled out for the season with a knee injury. Veteran Sam Darnold will be their starter when their season starts next week.

The Bears signed Rypien in March to be a veteran mentor for future draft pick Caleb Williams. The Bears now have perhaps the youngest quarterback room in the NFL, consisting of two rookies and second-year player Tyson Bagent.

Latest on the Bears
The Bears cut the veteran Tuesday.
The general manager who brought Caleb Williams, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and other upgrades to the Bears’ roster also is resolutely behind the coach he hired in 2022 and retained in 2024. “To keep a team together through adversity is extremely difficult.”
The Bears got a sixth-round pick for Fields, but it jumps to a fourth if he plays at least 51% of the Steelers’ offensive snaps.
