As for distance, I found a super sprint considerably easier than running a half marathon, and olympic distance was probably about the same as a 20 mile run.
Training wise I used to cycle from north Brum to Kingsbury and do the Parkrun Course, then cycled to Dosthill Quarry to do a few laps and then cycled home.
