Report: Tottenham ‘weighed up’ potential move for defender but decided against it

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur have missed out on Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who is now on his way to RB Leipzig.

The versatile Geertruida, who can operate at right-back as well as at centre-back, has emerged as one of the most highly-rated defenders across the Eredivisie over the last few years.

The 24-year-old has been a regular in the Dutch national side of late and it was reported by several outlets earlier this summer that he was on the radar of Spurs as well as several other Premier League clubs (De Telegraaf).

Leipzig win race for Geertruida

TEAMtalk have now confirmed that the Lilywhites have now faced defeat in their pursuit as Geertruida is on his way to the Red Bull Arena in a €25m (£21m) deal.

The report says that Ange Postecoglou’s men ‘weighed up’ a move for the Dutchman earlier this summer while Aston Villa and Liverpool also expressed their admiration for the player.

However, it is Leipzig who have sunk the defining blow, with Fabrizio Romano also confirming that the defender is on his way to Germany.

As soon as Ange and his coaching staff decided to give Djed Spence a chance this season, it was clear that the club had abandoned their pursuits of Geertruida and Vanderson, who they were previously alleged to be tracking.

Spurs will make do with the likes of Djed Spence, Archie Gray and Ben Davies as full-back support until the January window at the very least.
