Postecoglou reacts to Tottenham’s Europa League draw and facing Rangers again
The Europa League draw has been made, and Tottenham Hotspur now know who they will be facing in the first stage of their continental adventure this season. Speaking at a press conference today, Ange Postecoglou commented on the teams he will be facing.
Trip to Ibrox should be fun
After a respectable fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, Postecoglou will be leading his men into Europe, and expectations are high for Spurs, with many predicting they could go all the way in the Europa League.
In the new format of the competition, Tottenham will play eight games as part of a league stage. Their opponents will be Roma, Rangers, AZ Alkmaar, Ferencvaros, Qarabag, Galatasaray, Elfsborg, and Hoffenheim.
Upon hearing the news, Postecoglou was asked about the draw in his latest press conference (via Sky Sports) and had a little joke about the idea of returning to face his old rivals, Rangers.
He said: “Yeah it’s exciting. It’s good to be a part of it. Some good games… I’m sure I’ll get a warm reception at Ibrox, they’ll be looking forward to seeing me.”
Exciting narratives at play
The big story from the draw for Spurs is that Postecoglou will return to Glasgow to face Rangers, with a hostile reception expected for the former Celtic boss. While in Scotland, Postecoglou delivered the treble for Celtic, and had the better of Rangers during his stay up North.
Meanwhile, former Spurs striker Troy Parrott will get a chance to show the Lilywhites what they are missing when he lines up for AZ Alkmaar against them.
There is also a chance for Davinson Sanchez to prove himself against Spurs when his Galatasaray side host Postecoglou’s side.
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s a really interesting draw that gives us a good combination of challenging games, and exciting narratives, but also games we should be winning quite comfortably.
It probably won’t go that way, but you’d like to think Spurs can at the very least get through these games as one of the top teams in the league.
