‘Part of my plan’ – Postecoglou insists his transfer strategy is being backed by Spurs

The transfer window closes tonight, and Ange Postecoglou has made a handful of signings, three of which are teenagers. Speaking to the press today, the Spurs boss explained why he has gone for that particular player profile.

Planning for the long-term

With Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall both being 18-years-old, and Wilson Odobert just a year older, Postecoglou has acquired some of the most exciting teenage talents in Europe this summer.

Some fans have lamented the fact the club hasn’t signed more experienced, supposedly first-team-ready players, but it appears Postecoglou is putting faith in his young players to step up to the task here and now.

In his latest press conference (via Football.London), Postecoglou was asked about the type of player he has been signing. He insisted he has been properly backed by the board this summer, and suggested it was all part of the plan to build a squad for the future.

He said: “It was definitely part of my plan because I think when you’re trying to build or rebuild a team, you’ve got to… look, all managers hope they’re there for the long-term, but the reality is that you don’t know how long you’ll be there, but I’ve always tried to build teams that will last over a cycle which is, you know, three, four, five years.

“It’s just a natural consequence of that. You’re looking at a younger demographic, a team that will grow, that will improve, that will adapt to the challenges ahead.”

The squad needed rebuilding

When Postecoglou arrived last summer, he inherited an experienced yet jaded squad who had clearly reached their limits at Tottenham. The club has now moved on just about every player from that old regime, and the Spurs boss claims this was a very necessary step in his rebuild.

He added: “When I got here it was a team that, even from a demographic point of view, looked like it was at the end of a cycle.

“A lot of players who had had great careers but were either ready to move on or getting to the end of it. So that combination with a different approach for me, it was definitely part of it to go younger.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I know some fans aren’t happy that we’ve ‘only’ signed teenagers this summer, but I think it’s a really positive step, and it’s not like the players we’ve signed aren’t ready for first-team Premier League football, either. Hopefully, the fact Ange is wanting these players means he’s here for the long-haul, too.
