Need to re-enforce mast base

Hi everyone
I have an old laser 2 (hard to say which year - the picture below may give you some reference).

I went sailing yesterday and got into the extreme wind. When I returned, I found that the wind had damaged the mast base (the picture below). I'm thinking of taking the mast out and maybe opening the area of the hull around the mast to reinforce the area inside the hull. then, add fiberglass on top.

am I in the right direction? any other suggestions?
