Angelina Jolie doesn't want to live in LA either
- Angelina Jolie says she plans to leave Los Angeles after all her children turn 18.
- She told The Hollywood Reporter that she's only in LA because of her ongoing divorce proceedings.
- Over 800,000 people left California between 2021 and 2022, making it the state with the most people moving out.
Angelina Jolie is ready to leave Los Angeles.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Friday, she revealed her plans to leave the city after all her kids turn 18.
"I grew up in this town. I am here because I have to be here from a divorce, but as soon as they're 18, I'll be able to leave," Jolie told the outlet.
Jolie and her ex Brad Pitt share six children together: Maddox, 22; Pax, 20; Zahara, 19; Shiloh, 18; and twins Knox and Vivienne, 15.
In 2016, two years after they got married, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt.
Since ending their relationship, the former couple has been embroiled in a messy legal battle, including one involving a winery they once jointly owned.
In a 2022 court filing, Jolie accused Pitt of choking one of their kids and striking another during a flight in 2016.
"When you have a big family, you want them to have privacy, peace, safety. I have a house now to raise my children, but sometimes this place can be … that humanity that I found across the world is not what I grew up with here," Jolie said.
After leaving LA, Jolie says she plans to "spend a lot of time in Cambodia" and visit her family members "wherever they may be in the world."
This isn't the first time that Jolie has mentioned her desire to be in Cambodia.
In December 2023, she told The Wall Street Journal that she has another home there.
"It's part of what happened after my divorce. I lost the ability to live and travel as freely. I will move when I can," Jolie said.
If Jolie follows through with her plans to leave LA, she'll join a long list of celebrities — such as Sylvester Stallone, Kelly Clarkson, and Mark Wahlberg — who have made the same move.
It isn't just celebrities who are leaving LA
Between 2021 and 2022, 817,669 people left California — making it the US state with the most people moving out. Some popular destinations for former California residents include Texas and Arizona, per the Census Bureau.
Several former residents that Business Insider previously spoke to cited rising crime rates and the high cost of living as factors that contributed to their decision to move away from California.
Even the wealthy are ditching their LA mansions for houses in cheaper areas, driven out by the "mansion tax" which affects houses sold for over $5 million.
A representative for Jolie did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
