I am a hot sleeper. Far too often, I wake up covered in sweat, hair plastered to my damp forehead, blankets and top sheet thrown to the floor. It sucks, not just for me, but also for my husband, who compares me to a furnace radiating heat. With this sleep history in my back pocket, I excitedly but skeptically gave the Leesa Oasis Chill Hybrid a chance.
Made by the same company that makes the top pick in our guide to the best mattresses, the Oasis Chill Hybrid is meticulously engineered to optimize comfort and temperature regulation. It comes in two comfort levels and boasts a "distinctly huggable feel." It's mid-priced at around $1,700 for a queen and frequently available on sale. For the right user, it's worth the investment.
I've broken down my experience sleeping on this cooling mattress below. If you're a fellow hot sleeper on the hunt for your perfect bed, check out our guide to the best cooling mattresses for even more options.
Design
The Leesa Oasis Chill Hybrid features six layers designed to optimize cooling and comfort. The three closest to your skin are each specially engineered for temperature regulation, including a cover infused with cooling fibers, a gel-infused foam layer, and copper-infused memory foam layers.
The bottom three layers are intended to support and cradle your body, providing the premium comfort that Leesa is known for. That includes a responsive layer made of adaptable memory foam, the zoned support layer with over a thousand individually wrapped springs, and a stability layer of high-density foam for better support and durability.
The mattress is available in two comfort levels: plush and cushion-firm. Both offer a distinct, hug-like feel. For this review, I tested the cushion-firm, which is the most popular option and suited for all sleep styles, whereas the plush is recommended for strictly side sleepers and those who want to feel cradled.
Our review of the Leesa Oasis Chill Hybrid mattress
Setup
Setting up the Leesa Oasis Chill Hybrid is a breeze, as has become the norm in today's age of beds-in-boxes. It arrived on my doorstep in a box that came up to my hips and was relatively easy to shimmy into the house. Once inside, I used a box cutter to tear away the cardboard shell, revealing a tightly wrapped mattress roll within. From there, I laid it out on my bed slats, cut away the plastic casing, and let it unfurl and inflate the rest of the day. My husband helped me out a lot here, but it's not impossible to unbox alone.
I didn't note any strong odors from the mattress, which was a pleasant surprise. When I pressed my nose to the cushions, it had a mild chemical smell, but by bedtime, that was fully gone.
For those who don't want to set up their mattress themselves, Leesa works with LoadUp to offer in-home setup and mattress removal, starting at $159. After your mattress is delivered through UPS Ground, you'll receive an email to coordinate setup.
Comfort and Support
Most nights, I sleep on my side or back and prefer softer beds. When checking out, I opted for the cushion-firm setting of the Oasis Chill Hybrid. Despite the "firm" name, this bed is quite soft and lends a lot of squish, which I enjoyed quite a bit. It was marshmallowy soft on my back and took to the divots of my hips well when on my side. Though I'm not a full-time stomach sleeper, the few times I tried laying facedown were also comfortable on this mattress. It's plush — but not too plush — so my back didn't arc uncomfortably when doing so. After sleeping on it for several nights, I consistently woke up without soreness or discomfort.
That said, apparently, my spine is pretty skewed, according to the Mattress Checker app. There is still human error to account for in its calculations, but over my several uses of the app, my spine angle wildly fluctuated. At its worst, my spine deviated about 17 degrees — a far cry from the ideal neutral of 6 degrees. Taking this information into account, the Oasis Chill Hybrid would be best for back sleepers rather than side sleepers, but I found it very comfortable sleeping both ways.
Heat dissipation
Now for the mattress' main selling point, and why I was drawn to it in the first place: the cooling. I am a very hot sleeper, often waking up sweating in any season, even without a blanket. I've tried cooling products like blankets, sheets, and pillows with little to no major success. Needless to say, I was excited to welcome the Oasis Chill Hybrid to my home, but I also maintained a level of skepticism.
First, the facts: the mattress measured about 70 degrees Fahrenheit on average every night before I hopped in and measured about 80 degrees by the time I got up every morning. It would dissipate back down to about 70 degrees after two minutes away.
Considering the median temperature for a post-sleep mattress is 89.5 degrees, according to our team's extensive testing, these numbers are incredible. Compared to other models and brands we've tested, the Oasis Chill Hybrid maintains a relatively low temperature comparatively, despite having a very hot person sleeping on top of it for eight hours. Though it's far from the cure-all for my sweaty nights, this bed is great for my fellow hot sleepers.
Edge support
Edge support is important for all kinds of sleepers, but when you share your bed with pets like I do, it's especially critical to avoid rolling off when you have a chihuahua-mix who loves stretching out in the center. Good edge support means feeling reinforced by the mattress when sitting or lying on the edge of the bed but still having an easy time getting up in the morning.
We test this by sitting on the edge and measuring just how much the bed sinks under your weight. Between my husband and I who have a 20-pound weight difference between us, the measurement remained the same: the edge sank by four inches when we sat on it. That's slightly above the 3.5-inch average, meaning that the Leesa Oasis Chill Hybrid has slightly worse-than-average edge support.
I could feel this difference after sleeping on it for several weeks. My previous mattress, a cheap, no-name memory foam bed, had solid edge support that kept me from ever teetering off the edge. The plush surface of the Oasis Chill Hybrid, combined with its springy base layers, is a recipe for less-than-optimal support when nearing the bed's margins. I didn't necessarily fall off, but sleepers who toss and turn a lot could potentially find themselves building up enough momentum to tumble down.
Motion isolation
When I think of motion isolation, I am fondly reminded of the old Tempur-Pedic commercials that would feature a woman jumping up and down on a mattress with an unbothered wine glass proudly displayed on the other edge. To test motion isolation, we don't do exactly that, but we do drop a 15-pound weight a foot away from a soda can and tally how many times it tips over.
On average, the soda can tipped over 65% of the time when testing the Leesa Oasis Chill Hybrid's motion isolation. This is slightly worse than average when compared to the plethora of other mattresses we've tested.
This was palpable, too, when sleeping on it every night. Again, I not only sleep with a partner, but also with dogs, so I had a lot of opportunities to feel other occupants rustling the mattress. The motion isolation wasn't a dealbreaker, but if you're a light sleeper like me, you may want to consider something a bit less bouncy if you're sleeping with others.
Trial period and warranty
As has become standard for all direct-to-consumer online mattress retailers, Leesa offers a pretty robust trial period and warranty. Mattresses come with a 100-night trial period, giving you ample time to field test your new bed yourself before calling it quits. Only two mattress purchases per household can take advantage of this trial period. Returns are free, except a $100 return fee applies to customers in Hawaii and Alaska.
If you're keeping your mattress, Leesa covers you with a 10-year full replacement limited warranty. That means for 10 years after your initial purchase, you qualify for replacement or repair if you find a defect covered under the warranty. This is only applicable to the original purchaser of the mattress — secondhand owners don't qualify.
Both the trial period and warranty are voided if the mattress leaves the US or Canada.
Cons to consider
The biggest con that I found for the Oasis Chill Hybrid Mattress during testing is how wildly my spine deviates when sleeping on my side. Though it resulted in no palpable discomfort on my end, that outcome can't be guaranteed for all sleepers, especially those with chronic back pain. With that in mind, I'd be hesitant to recommend this bed to strict side sleepers or those with back pain.
The less-than-stellar edge support and motion isolation are also big factors to consider, especially if you sleep with a partner or pets. Light sleepers and those who toss and turn should be wary — the Oasis Chill Hybrid may not offer the support you need for a good night's sleep.
What are your alternatives?
The BI team has tested several of Leesa's mattress offerings. I recommend our top mattress overall pick, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid; its medium firmness appeals to all sleep types and offers incredible edge support and motion isolation, making it a perfect solution for couples and light sleepers. It's breathable, too, so while it may not be as cooling, it'll do the job for most.
There's also the Leesa Sapira Chill Mattress, the priciest of the Leesa mattresses I've mentioned here. It's available in three firmness options, and its cooling properties were great, but our reviewer found the edge support and motion isolation weren't as impressive as the initial Sapira design, which aligns with my experience with the Oasis Chill.
Alternatively, if cooling is still your priority but budget is an issue, the Lucid 10-inch Memory Foam Plush Mattress is an excellent option. At only $350, it delivers a cool sleeping experience with a gel-infused memory foam top layer. It also falls short in terms of edge support, but it comes in three different firmness options.
For sleepers with back pain, the Bear Star Hybrid is our cooling mattress pick for you. It stays cool and offers great heat dissipation with its Celliant-fiber cover designed for temperature regulation. Thanks to its medium firmness, it offers great support when side-sleeping in spite of back pain.
The bottom line
The Leesa Oasis Chill Hybrid is a premium bed that, despite some worse-than-average testing measurements, provides a lot of comfort. Its firmer setting is still very cushy, making it a great choice for plush bed lovers like me. It's designed with cooling in mind and it shows, with temperatures considerably lower than several of the other beds we've tested over the years. While it's no miracle cure for hot sleeping, it is one part of the sleep equation that can lend a great deal of comfort to warm sleepers.
