Editors Slugfest-A-Go-Go: Zipping through their final 2024 Emmy predictions in 56 categories in under 90 minutes [WATCH]

The 2024 Emmys are just around the corner with the Creative Arts ceremonies taking place Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8 followed by the big Primetime telecast hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy on Sunday, September 15. Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Ray Richmond gathered one last time for a special “Editors Slugfest-A-Go-Go,” zipping through their final predictions in 56 categories in under 90 minutes. Watch the video slugfest above.

On the comedy side, most of us are going with the odds-on favorite, “The Bear,” but Marcus is breaking with the pack by predicting a “Hacks” upset. “I went to some FYC parties and Emmy events over the past few weeks and there’s a lot of love for ‘Hacks,’ everyone,” he warns. “That’s when I switched, we’ll see if I’m right.” We can all agree that Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”) look like safe bets for the top acting prizes.

Watch our lively chats with Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”) and over 200 of the 2024 Emmy nominees…

When it comes to drama, the consensus is a big series win for “Shōgun,” along with lead acting contenders Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. One category certain to go a different direction is Best Drama Supporting Actress, where all four of us agree “The Crown’s” Elizabeth Debicki will follow up her Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG Award with her first Emmy for playing Princess Diana. For Best Drama Supporting Actor, Marcus, Ray and Daniel predict a second victory for Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”), while Denton predicts Tadanobu Asano will be carried along in the “Shōgun” wave. With that he warns, “I think Jonathan Pryce (‘The Crown’) could be a possible spoiler, but Jon Hamm and Takehiro Hira aren’t taking votes away from Crudup and Asano. I’m not worried about vote splits there, but I’m going with Asano.”

For Best Limited Series the obvious front-runner is “Baby Reindeer,” taking the top slot from all four editors. However, Daniel remarks, “It’s interesting it is the fourth-most nominated of these five limited series, but it’s not the kind of technical show that we’d expect to see in a lot of creative arts categories, so I don’t think that hurts it. I would watch out for ‘True Detective’ being the most nominated show, but I do think ‘Baby Reindeer’ will win.”

In the Best Limited Series Actress category we’re split, with Denton and Daniel betting on Jodi Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Marcus and Ray putting money on Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”). “It’s the battle of the Oscar winners,” says Ray. “I’m going with Brie Larson in an upset here.” Daniel admits, “This is one of those categories I’m not very confident about,” while noting Juno Temple‘s (“Fargo”) recent Gold Derby Award. Denton adds, “I actually have Naomi Watts as a shocking, upset second place. The actors branch loved ‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.’ So even though it didn’t get in for series, with the actors branch voting for these, every acting category has someone from ‘Feud’ in it. They clearly loved that show.”

For Best Actor, Denton, Daniel and Ray are going with front-runner Richard Gadd (“Baby Reindeer”), while Marcus launches an argument for Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”). “I just have a hard time thinking that somebody no one had heard of before April is going to win three Emmys! I have my 500 point bet on this category for Tom Hollander. This is a huge star, the acting branch loved ‘Feud,’ he has a physical transformation. He is the ‘Capote’ in the title. This is a huge performance, and if things like that still matter, it’s Tom Hollander!”

And that’s only a fraction of what we covered — in fact, we discussed every category from Gold Derby’s Primetime and Creative Arts Emmys predictions center. So sound off on who you agree or disagree with — and more importantly, make your OWN predictions and prove you’re the smartest Emmys prognosticator of all.
