Fury as major cat food firm slashes size of popular pouches but keeps price SAME amid cost of living crisis
PET owners are being hit by shrinkflation as pouches of cat food are reduced in size but still cost the same.
They are paying £3.75 for a multipack of Purina Felix Original but the 12 individual sachets now weigh just 85g compared with the original 100g.
It means owners are forking out 6p extra per 100g for their feline friends.
The manufacturer claimed research showed cats were not eating as much and a smaller portion was more suitable.
The wet food pouches come in flavours including fish, chicken and beef and are available with jelly or gravy.
Cat owner and mum of two Amy Piper, 32, of Wantage, Oxon, said: “I’m surprised a company that should be looking out for our pets is quietly reducing their food portions.
“It’s very sneaky.
“Maybe someone should come and explain this to my cats because they’re the ones who are worse off.
“They always finish the food in front of them.
“It’s so hard to switch because they get used to a certain brand and refuse to eat anything else.”
Purina said the multipacks were reduced earlier this year from £4.50 to £3.75 in readiness for the new portion size hitting supermarket shelves.
The company insisted: “The 85g portion remains complete and balanced.
“Our research shows that cats tend to eat less than 100g in a sitting so, by serving smaller portions, owners can prevent wet food from drying out and ensure that their cat has fresh wet food in every meal.
“We know that many people are still facing cost-of-living pressures.
“In anticipation of the new portion size hitting shelves, we reduced the price of Felix Originals pouches by around 17 per cent.”
Felix As Good As It Looks, a slightly pricier range, is still available to buy with the original 100g pouches.
