Jose Quintana Notches 100th Career Win In Another Strong Start

0

Pitching deep into games has become a consistent thing for the New York Mets’ starters in recent weeks. Jose Quintana continued the trend in Saturday’s 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds, making pretty incredible history along the way. The veteran notched his 100th win of his career, becoming the first Columbian pitcher to reach that mark. Another massive day for both the Mets and Quintana.

The Reds’ offense was only able to create a few scoring opportunities. When they did, Quintana executed and worked out of trouble. In the top of the second inning, Spencer Steer stood out on first base with no outs. Quintana got Ty France to hit a ground ball to the left side, resulting in 4-6-3 double play. The same situation presented itself in the third and the outcome was no different. Jonathan India grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, ending the possibility of a big inning for the Reds.

Quintana’s most stressful inning came in the fourth. With the score 0-0, Tyler Stephenson led the inning off with a double down the right-field line. He eventually moved over to third base on a wild pitch, putting the first run of the game 90 feet away with just one out. Quintana managed to tip toe out of it, getting France and TJ Friedl to ground out. That situation would eventually prove to be big.

The Mets scored four runs in the sixth, lining Quintana up for the win. He got the first two outs in the seventh before exiting the game. His final line was 6 2/3 innings, no runs, five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Quintana has earned the win in back to back starts.

“He [Jose] has done it for a long time in his career. 100 wins today. Proud of him. Congrats, shout-out to him. He understands that it is a long and guys are going to go through stretches where it is going to be hard for them. They are going to struggle and they are going  to find a way,” Carlos Mendoza said about Quintana’s ability to bounce back.

The 35-year-old has enjoyed a good stretch. Over his last three starts, Quintana is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA across 18 innings. He has been able to avoid the home runs, not allowing one in each of his last four starts. Hopefully a sign of even more improvement down the stretch.
