‘Ramifications’ – Ange Postecoglou discusses Rodrigo Bentancur’s FA charge
The build-up to the North London derby this weekend has been clouded by the ongoing off-field issues surrounding Rodrigo Bentancur. In his latest press conference, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has addressed the matter, and how the player himself is feeling.
Postecoglou is leaving it to the FA
Over the summer, Bentancur hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons after racially offensive comments made in an interview with a Uruguayan press outlet when discussing his club teammate, Heung-min Son.
The midfielder appeared to suggest that all South Koreans look alike, which caused an uproar within the Korean community and indeed throughout the game.
Bentancur apologised profusely at the time for what he described as a ‘bad joke’, and the matter had gone quiet for a while. But, this week, the situation resurfaced as the FA confirmed it would be charging the 27-year-old for breaching Rule E3 for misconduct in an interview.
It has been suggested that the Spurs man could end up being banned for between six to 12 weeks by the FA if the charge is upheld (Football.London).
Naturally, Postecoglou was asked about the latest developments on the situation in his press conference ahead of this weekend’s action, and the Spurs boss clearly didn’t want to say too much on the matter.
He said (via Football.London): “We know it’s something the league will look at and we need to let the process play out. Rodrigo’s well aware of the ramifications.”
What was done about the incident?
At the time, Son himself spoke to ESPN about the incident and explained that he had accepted Bentancur’s apology and knew the intentions were not harmful or malicious.
The club itself released a statement revealing the staff and players would be given extra training and education to improve diversity and inclusion processes.
Spurs Web Opinion
I didn’t expect Postecoglou to really say anything meaningful on this matter as it’s such a delicate and tricky situation. To be honest, as much as it might affect us as a squad, I do think Bentancur should get some kind of serious punishment for this; joke or not, these kinds of things have to be stopped.
