Lawmakers call for increased security for former President Trump

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)---The FBI is investigating what it says appears to be a second assassination attempt on Former President Donald Trump. The latest happened Sunday in West Palm Beach Florida.

Both sides of the aisle want an end to political violence.

U.S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand released a statement saying, “I’m grateful that former President Trump is safe, and I’m thankful to the Secret Service and local law enforcement for responding swiftly. Political violence has absolutely no place in our country.”

Democratic Congressman Paul Tonko shared a similar sentiment adding not only is he grateful for the Secret Service and that Trump is safe, but that the suspect has been apprehended.

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy has called on President Joe Biden to increase Trump’s security to that of a sitting president.

"We owe it to the American people to make sure we have a fair and honest election and that our nominees for the presidency, whether it be Trump or Harris are protected at all costs." said Langworthy.

Congressman Marc Molinaro also believes action should be taken to strengthen Trump’s security. The congressman co-sponsors bipartisan legislation that would do that for every major party candidate.

"I think it’s a piece of legislation that needs to moved on very, very quickly," explained Molinaro. "We of course don’t have the time to necessarily have that adopted into law to have that effect this presidential election cycle. President Biden has the authority now to take the action."

On Monday President Biden spoke to reporters saying, "The service needs more help. And I think Congress should respond to their needs, if in fact they need more servicemen."

As for the issue of enhanced security detail, Congressman Langworthy hopes quick action will take place before Congress goes on recess at the end of September.
