IAS officer Tina Dabi, known for her remarkable achievement as the UPSC 2015 topper, found herself in the spotlight once again, this time for her reaction to a viral video from an event in Rajasthan’s Barmer. During the event, where she was a guest of honor, a surprising and heartwarming moment unfolded when Sonu Kanwar, a Sarpanch from the area, delivered a welcome speech in fluent English.
Kanwar, dressed in traditional Rajputi attire with a ghoonghat, amazed the audience and Dabi alike with her impeccable English-speaking skills. The unexpected contrast between her traditional appearance and her fluency in English visibly astonished Tina Dabi, a moment that resonated with the attendees. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause, showing their admiration for Kanwar’s speech.
The video, shared on social media by X user Kailash Singh Sodha, quickly went viral, capturing Dabi’s genuine surprise and the positive reaction from the crowd. In her address, the Sarpanch remarked, “I am glad to be part of this day. First of all, I welcome our collector Tina ma’am. Being a woman, it’s an honour to welcome Tina ma’am.”

Tina Dabi’s professional journey continues to capture attention as she takes on the new role of Collector of Barmer, Rajasthan. Her leadership and administrative skills have been key in her rise since topping the UPSC exam in 2015. This new role comes at a time when her husband, IAS officer Pradeep Gawande, has been assigned as the District Collector of Jalore, which is approximately 150 kilometres from Barmer.
She first made headlines in 2015 when she topped the UPSC examination on her first attempt, a feat that garnered her national recognition. She began her administrative career as an Assistant Collector in Ajmer in 2017. Her previous marriage to fellow IAS officer Athar Aamir Khan, which was widely covered in the media, ended in 2020 after two years. Her sister Ria Dabi, also made headlines by securing an all-India rank of 15 in the UPSC examination of 2020.
