The 40-year-old driver of a vehicle which collided with a car driven by a Greek Cypriot man in the north and killed him appeared in court in Morphou on Tuesday.

The Greek Cypriot, named as 61-year-old Charalambos Anastasiou, was driving through the village of Zodia, near Morphou when he was hit by another vehicle.

According to the prosecutor in court on Tuesday, the 40-year-old man ran a red light before careering into Anastasiou’s car, was “driving in a way which would endanger human life”, and “did not slow down to a safe speed at the intersection”.

The prosecutor requested that the man be held in custody subject to the next phase of his trial, which will begin in northern Nicosia on October 1.

The man’s lawyer, Doga Zeki, said he had no objection to his client being held in custody.
