Meta bans RT and other Russian State media
Meta, the owner of Facebook, announced on Monday that it had banned RT, Rossiya Segodnya, and other Russian state media networks from its platforms. The decision was made after Meta claimed that these outlets used deceptive tactics to conduct covert influence operations online, Reuters reported.
This move marks a significant escalation in Meta’s actions against Russian state media, which previously involved more limited measures such as blocking their advertisements and reducing the reach of their posts.
Meta explained that, after thorough consideration, it expanded its enforcement against Russian state media outlets, citing Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and related entities as being involved in foreign interference activities. The ban will be implemented across all Meta-owned platforms globally.
The ban enforcement is expected to be rolled out over the next few days. Meta’s platforms include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.
Meta’s decision followed U.S. money-laundering charges against two RT employees, alleging they hired an American company to influence the 2024 U.S. election. Meta expects Russian state-controlled media to continue deceptive online practices despite previous attempts to evade detection.
Meta’s ban reflects growing concerns about the role of Russian state media in foreign interference, especially regarding sensitive political matters. As Meta ramps up its enforcement, it signals a broader push to prevent covert influence campaigns from impacting global audiences.
