Candidates for the new European Commission named, what will Luxembourg get?
On Tuesday, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, unveiled the candidates for the new European Commission, comprising 27 members, including herself as the chair. The allocation of portfolios has been a complex process, taking into account various factors such as the candidates’ capabilities, geographical balance, and political affiliations. Wopke Hoekstra, who has been serving as the European Commissioner for Climate Action since October 5, 2023, will now oversee the Climate and Green Growth portfolio. Initially, he was considered for the Agriculture and Trade portfolios, but after the final allocation by von der Leyen, he was assigned a different role. Hoekstra will report to Teresa Ribera, the Spanish Vice-President of the Commission, who will handle the Climate and Innovation portfolio. Ribera is familiar to Hoekstra from her previous roles as Spain’s finance minister and climate minister. The agricultural portfolio for the Netherlands has been assigned to Christophe Hansen from Luxembourg.
