National Voter Registration Day events take place Tuesday
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Are you registered to vote? Now would be a good time to check with National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday.
It was a set up of red, white and blue throughout Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City’s student center Tuesday. It wasn’t necessarily for a party or celebration, but to Dr. Steven Collins, a political science professor at the school, it was still a big day.
"Today is about getting informed and getting involved,” Collins said.
September 17 marks National Voter Registration Day and OSU-OKC students organized an event to let students either register to vote or verify their voter registration as well as gather as much information as possible on the U.S. Constitution, voter precincts and more.
"Everyone needs to do it,” Student Jason Miller said. “I constantly hear people complain about different problems, but none of them actually want to try and fix it themselves."
"We don't care what party you register with or who you vote for, we want to give you as much information as you need to vote your conscience,” Collins said. "Even if you stay home, that's a vote because it can tilt a close election one way or the other."
The number of registered voters in the state continues to rise as well.
"Since September 1st, we've seen nearly 17,000 people register to vote,” Public Information Officer with the State Election Board Misha Mohr said.
Mohr added that they’re closing in on 2.4 million registered voters in Oklahoma, with the feeling that they’re going to surpass that. Their annual voter registration report from January shows well over 200,000 more registered voters since the 2020 election.
It’s events like the one at OSU-OKC that will continue that growth to.
"We live in a republic, a representative democracy,” Collins said. “People should get involved because if you don't get involved, other people are going to make decisions for you."
October 11 is the last day to register to vote in Oklahoma. That’s also the last day to update your registration. More deadlines and information can be found at the Oklahoma Voter Portal here.
