Wamego police investigate school threat
WAMEGO (KSNT) - Police took action Monday in Wamego following allegations of violence at a local school.
The Wamego Police Department (WPD) posted to social media on Sept. 17 about a recent situation at a USD 320 school. Police said they were informed of a group chat mentioning violence at a school in the district before students arrived at their classrooms Monday morning.
The WPD increased the presence of its officers at USD 320 schools while an investigation took place. Officers found that a non-threatening remark was made on Friday, Sept. 13 and, after being passed around between several people, came to be perceived as a threat.
Police later found a photo of a magazine from a firearm was distributed to students in the district. The WPD seized the magazine and confirmed there is no threat to students from the photo in question.
"Staff at Wamego Police and USD 320 want to do our best to keep the students safe. WPD asks that if you hear a remark, or on social media see a remark, about school violence, notify law enforcement as soon as you hear or read about it, so we may investigate it in a timely manner."
