TOPEKA (KSNT) - City of Topeka crews will be closing an intersection on Topeka Boulevard for almost a week to complete mill and overlay work.

Robert Bidwell with the City of Topeka issued a press release on Tuesday, Sept. 17 regarding an upcoming road construction project at the intersection of Southwest 37th Street and Topeka Boulevard. The project will last a total of five days and is due to start on Monday, Sept. 23 depending on weather conditions.

Drivers will be directed to take one of four different detour routes when approaching the intersection. These include:

  • Northbound - drivers from the Topeka Boulevard/I-470/Kansas Avenue intersection, east on Kansas Avenue and follow it north to 29th Street. Traffic then follows the existing detour route north to 12th Street then west to Topeka Boulevard.
  • Southbound - motorists from Topeka Boulevard and Huntoon Street proceed east on Huntoon Street/12th Street to Kansas Avenue. Traffic then continues south on Kansas Avenue until it curves west to Topeka Boulevard.
  • Eastbound - drivers from 37th Street and Burlingame Road head north on Burlingame Road to 29th Street, then move east to Kansas Avenue and south to 37th Street.
  • Westbound - motorists go from 37th Street and Kansas Avenue move north on Kansas Avenue to 29th Street then west to Burlingame Road and south to 37th Street.

Bidwell said both 37th Street and Topeka Boulevard will stay open to local traffic to get to businesses and residences up to the intersection closure. After this current project is completed and open again, mill and overlay work will move on 37th Street between Topeka Boulevard and Kansas Avenue. Traffic will be brought down to one lane in each direction on 37th Street with all work slated to end on Nov. 11, 2024.
