House speaker schedules likely-doomed vote to fund government —and eyes Plan B: report

0

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) reportedly scheduled a likely-doomed vote Wednesday on a Republican funding plan, according to a report.

As Johnson faces pressure to avert a government shutdown — including from firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) — the house speaker set up a vote that would fund the government for six months, CNN reported.

Two Republican aides told the news outlet that Johnson's plan to put the legislation before lawmakers this week is aimed at showing it will fail and set him up to move to a second plan. Details on the second plan weren't immediately known.

The bill includes a measure aimed at combatting non-citizen voting, according to CNN. The government is set to run out of funding by the end of September.

In announcing the vote, Johnson said lawmakers have "an immediate obligation to do two things: responsibly fund the federal government and ensure the security of our elections."
