Pundit says ‘brave’ Spurs star has not got the credit he deserves this season
Danny Murphy believes James Maddison deserves a lot of praise because the attacking midfielder has not got the credit he deserves for his start to the season.
James Maddison is at the peak of his powers
Maddison had shown signs of being back to his best in the first few games of the campaign and he was threatening a ten-on-ten performance.
He produced that against Brentford on Saturday, with the attacking midfielder delivering an absolute masterclass in the left-sided number eight role.
Not only did Maddison look a real threat every time he got on the ball in the final third but he also dropped deep and helped his side progress the ball up the pitch all game, effortlessly weaving his way through the Bees’ press.
The 27-year-old got his just rewards at the end as his 85th-minute goal ensured that the home side took all the points, with his celebration suggesting that he was relieved to finally get off the mark for the season.
Does James Maddison deserve more praise?
Reacting to Maddison’s performances against the Bees, Murphy said on Match of the Day: “I did pick him out because he was the best player on the pitch. Some sections of the media or people have questioned his start to the season, and I think that’s because Tottenham have started poorly.
“He has started this season very similar to the beginning of the last. He was the best player on the opening day at Leicester. Against Everton, he was superb when they won.
“Against Newcastle, he helped them dominate the game for long periods and probably should have won, and today in this deeper role that Postecoglou has put him in as a central midfielder, Kulusevski ahead of him, he was absolutely outstanding.
“He is always brave, goes and gets the ball under pressure, and he’s always positive with his passing. And so many times he set them on the attack because he takes responsibility.” Gray Lineker then added: “He’s a brilliant player, he really is.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Maddison has been excellent all season, attackers need to score goals to get the credit they deserve, and it is great to see the 27-year-old’s displays now being recognized.
When the former Leicester man is at his best, there are not too many better players to watch in the Premier League.
