Pacific University addresses threats made against Black students on Yik Yak
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Pacific University is cracking down on social media threats and hate speech directed at Black students on campus this week, administrators confirmed to KOIN 6 News on Thursday.
The university said posts made to the anonymous social media app Yik Yak have been shared with law enforcement as the school and police work to identify those involved in the threats.
“Hate speech and violence are not consistent with Pacific’s values and will not be tolerated,” the school said in a statement to KOIN 6 News. “Threats directed at any member of the campus community are taken seriously.”
Meanwhile, the university is reaching out to those affected by the hate speech and providing resources through their Office of Student Support, Counseling Center, and Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility.
“Pacific University is committed to developing a diverse and equitable community of students, faculty and staff as we live up to our mission to inspire students to think, care, create, and pursue justice in the world,” university officials said.
