ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) -- There is a warning for utility customers about using third-party site "Doxo" to make online payments for bills -- timing is important.

Cristian LeJeune, city of Abbeville's digital media assistant, said Doxo is a check writing service.

“You basically pay them with a credit card and they will mail a check to wherever your bill needs to be," LeJeune said.

While using the check writing service is OK, LeJeune said customers should be aware that those payments are not as instant as those made made through the city of Abbeville's website.

"It became an issue because people thought when they were paying that online, that it was coming directly to us right away but that's not the case," she said and that the city has to wait for those checks to arrive.

Customers that wish to use Doxo should consider paying the bill far enough in advance that it can be mailed and credited to the utility account before the disconnect date, LeJeune said.

She suggested if people are going to pay online, make sure they're on the city of Abbeville’s official website. Other options can be going to the drive-through window, using the walk-up window by city hall, or paying inside during office hours.
