Nilofer was the last princess of the Ottoman royal dynasty of Turkey. When she was born, the royal family of Turkey was breathing its last and the Ottoman Empire was moving downwards. Speaking of her family, at the age of 2, she lost her father. It was in 1924, that she was forced to leave Turkey along with her mother and come to France. This was due to the outcome of the First World War(WW1) as the Ottoman dynasty was dethroned. Living behind the rich and royal life, the beautiful princess lived in France like an ordinary person.
However, the princess faced several ups and downs in her life. The only silver line that brought luck was her marriage Prince Moazzam Jah, and to become the daughter-in-law of the world’s richest royal family, the Hyderabad Nizam. The Nizam had relations with the Turkish dynasty. He wanted his son to marry into the Ottoman dynasty. After marriage in 1931, Nilofer was welcomed in Hyderabad.
When she came to Hyderabad after marriage, there was a custom of purdah for women in the Nizam family. However, Nilofer never stayed behind the purdah, rather she opened the closed door of public life for women in the Nizam family of Hyderabad. She started attending parties, functions and events in Hyderabad.
Soon, she became the most notable person in Hyderabad. Not only she went to the functions but she started going to the elite night parties. Things took a turn when Nilofer’s mother-in-law, Begum Dulhan Pasha remained upset with her modern lifestyle. It is reported that rumors surfaced that Begum Dulhan Pasha even plotted to poison her daughter-in-law.
Though her first marriage ended, Nilofer moved on, receiving film offers from Hollywood, which she declined. Later, she married an American war hero, writer, and film producer named Edward Pope.
As per the News18 Hindi report, some historians like Mohammad Safiullah stated that Nilofer’s marriage with Moazzam Jah was a mismatch. The conclusion was made on seeing the difference in their height. Nilofer’s height was 5 foot 10 inches while her husband was 5 feet and 3 inches respectively. Her husband was shorter than her and had 50 concubines, which likely strained their relationship.
Another historian, Peter Mason, speculated that had fate aligned more in her favor, Nilofer might have been remembered as one of the greatest queens of the world. Nevertheless, her legacy as a royal figure of beauty and influence endures.
Princess Nilofer passed away in 1989 in France. She was buried next to her mother, having lived a life that spanned royalty, hardship, and eventual peace. Despite her ups and downs, she remains an iconic figure, forever remembered for her grace, beauty, and royal style.
