EN, FR, PR: Angola, South Africa and Comoros bag wins at U20 qualifiers
There were big wins for South Africa, Angola and Comoros on day two of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier player at the ABB Stadium in Matola, Mozambique on Friday.
But defending champions Zambia had the bitter taste of defeat as their campaign got off to a difficult start with a 3-1 loss to the Angolans in the only match played in Group B.
It was Angola who scored the opener in the 27th minutes from a penalty-spot. Amado Haidara, the Angola goal poacher converted as he sent the keeper the wrong way. This was after Sekanji Siame had fouled Emanuek Gonçalves in the box.
Before the goal, Zambia’s Pascol Phiri took a well-placed free-kick from 20-yards that was pushed over the crossbar by Angola goalkeeper Domingos Da Silva.
Simão Pedro volleyed home for a second for Angola after the half-hour mark from a rebound to give his side a 2-0 lead.
In the second period, Angola remained solid at the back trying to catch the opponents on a counter-attack.
Zambia’s second half substitutes combined on 72 minutes to reduce the deficit to a single goal when Mumba Mwale covered from Henry Mbuti’s cut back.
But an own goal from Fostino Chanda in referees’ optional time at the end of the game secured three points for Angola.
South Africa applied all of the early pressure in their 5-0 Group C win against Malawi but took 36 minutes to open the scoring through Shakeel April.
Malawi failed to deal with a low cross into the box and goalkeeper Innocent Kamwambi could only clear the ball against his own defender, allowing April to turn and fire into an empty net.
South Africa doubled that advantage just before halftime when April stabbed the ball into the net after Kamwambi flapped at his effort and the ball trickled over the line.
South Africa extended their advantage on 49 minutes when April beat the offside trap and unselfishly crossed for Lee Jody Ashane to tap in at the back post.
It was 4-0 when substitute Kutlwano Letlhaku raced onto a through ball and flicked the ball past the goalkeeper, before Mbekezele Mbokazi converted at the back post to make it 5-0.
A late goal from Malaik Bacar gave Comoros a deserved 1-0 victory over Lesotho in the Group C opener.
Lesotho should have at least had two goals in the first quarter of the game but poor finishing let them down.
Lesotho skipper Lehlohonolo Leemisa missed a golden chance as he failed to convert in the six-yards box, before Paseka Maile failed to beat the Comoros goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.
Comoros looked the better side after the break but their celebrations were cut short after Nassur Hassani’s 77th minute goal was ruled out for offside.
But four minutes later Bacar gave Comoros a well-deserved goal, beating the Lesotho goalkeeper at the near post to make the score 1-0.
Only the top team in each pool advances to the semifinals along with the best-placed runner-up, with the two finalists qualifying for the continental finals that are due to be played next year.
Those in turn will act as the African preliminary tournament for the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile, with the continent to have four representatives.

L’Afrique du Sud sans pitié
L’Afrique du Sud a frappé fort au cours de la deuxième journée de la TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 | COSAFAQualifier. Les Sud-Africains ont facilement pris le dessus sur la Zambie dans le groupe C. Les Comores ont également pris un bon départ dans la compétition.
On s’attendait à un duel épique entre l’Angola et la Zambie. Le match a finalement été parfaitement maitrisé par les Angolais même si les Young Chipolopolos n’ont pas à rougir de leur prestation. Toutefois, les Angolais ont été un cran au-dessus. Ils ont plié le match en trois minutes quand Haidara (28e) et Pedro (31e) ont surgit pour mettre l’Angola devant. Mwale a bien tenté de réduire le score à la 72e minute mais le but contre son camp de Chanda a fini par plombé les espoirs de revenir dans la rencontre.
De leur côté, les Comoriens, seuls représentants de l’océan Indien dans cette compétition, ont réalisé l’essentiel contre le Lesotho. Un but tardif de Malaik à la 81e minute a été suffisant pour lancer les Comores dans cette compétition.
On aborde la troisième journée de compétition ce samedi et l’Eswatini a déjà l’occasion de s’envoler au tableau en remportant son match, validant au passage sa qualification pour le prochain tour. L’Eswatini sera aux prises avec le Zimbabwe à midi. Une rencontre indécise sur bien des points d’autant que les Zimbabwéens n’ont pas été ridicules lors de leur première sortie. Ils ont été contraints au nul cependant. Une avalanche de but est attendue au cours de cette confrontation.
Le Mozambique a très mal démarré sa campagne en tombant les armes à la main au cours de la journée inaugurale. Les Maminhas n’ont d’autre choix que de s’imposer ce samedi pour espérer poursuivre la compétition. Le pays hôte affronte le Botswana, un adversaire qui semble à sa portée à première vue. Les Mozambicains devront notamment s’appuyer sur leur capacité à marquer des buts sur le tard pour tenter de surprendre leur adversaire.
Angola bate campeão e África do Sul goleia Malawi
A Selecção de Angola surpreendeu a campeã em título, Zâmbia, ao vencer por 3-1, na jornada inaugural do Grupo B do Torneio Sub-20 da COSAFA, qualificativo para o Campeonato Africano das Nações (CAN) que se vai disputar no próximo ano. A incontestável vitória dos “Palanquinhas” foi possível graças aos golos de Amado Haidara (27´), apontado na marca dos 11 metros, depois do seu colega Emanuel Gonçalves ter sido carregado na grande área. Na cobrança, Amado foi frio e abateu o guarda-redes Levison Banda.
Consistentes, seguros e confiantes, a equipa comandada por Henrique Neves Sobrinho, técnico de Angola, puxou de si e não tardou para chegar ao segundo golo, desta vez por intermédio do atacante a serviço do Estrela de Amadora de Portugal, Simão Pedro, que desferiu com o seu pé chamejante um petardo que foi parar nas malhas contrárias. A equipa lusófona a par de Moçambique, foi ao intervalo com a vantagem no marcador.
A Zâmbia, por sua vez, chegou ao golo do empate aos 71 minutos, depois Mumba Mwale ter saltado do banco. Já nos minutos adicionais (90´+2´), os angolanos agigantaram-se evoltaram a marcar por intermédio de Filipe Quissequel.
Lembrando que o Grupo B ficou reduzido a quatro equipas, Angola voltará a entrar em cena também, neste domingo, medindo forças com Namíbia, quando forem 15:00 horas, no Campo Número 2 da Arena Lalgy.
Entretanto, noutra partida, a contar ainda para a série C, a África do Sul entrou entrou com o pé direito ao golear por expressivos 5-0, a sua congénere do Malawi p. O avançado Shakeel April fez um bis, enquanto que os restantes golos foram marcados por Ahshene (54´),Letlhaku (69´) e Mbokazi (75´).
No desafio de abertura do mesmo grupo (C), os insulares das Comores levaram a melhor sobre a sua congénere do Lesotho, após vencer por 1-0, mercê do golo solitário de Malaik Bacar, a passagem do minuto 80. Depois de as duas equipas terem protagonizado uma primeira parte equilibrada, com as oportunidades de golo para cada lado, as Comores imprimiram uma forte pressão na segunda etapa justificando, deste modo o triunfo merecido.
Na próxima ronda, Malawi tem o encontro marcado com as Comores neste domingo, às 12:00 horas, no Campo Número dois da Arena Lalgy, seguindo no mesmo local, o embate entre a África do Sul e Lesotho (15:00 horas).
Por conseguinte, depois do desaire perante o seu público, a equipa anfitriã, Moçambique, entrará em acção amanhã, com a obrigação de vencer Botswana, esta que vem de um empate a uma bola frente ao Zimbabwe, na jornada inagural do Grupo A. Na prática, as duas equipas têm a obrigação de pontuar caso queiram manter vivas as aspirações de garantir uma vaga na fase final do CAN. O desafio está marcado para às 15:00 horas e será antecedido com o jogo entre Eswatini e o regressado Zimbabwe, às 12:00 horas.
De acordo com o regulamento da competição, o primeiro classificado de cada grupo, juntamente com o segundo melhor colocado, avançarão para as meias-finais, enquanto que as duas equipas que chegarem às finais da competição preliminar regional seguirão para a fase continental do próximo ano, que por sua vez, servirá de qualificação para a Taça do Mundo- 2025 a ser realizada no Chile.
Quatro selecções africanas estarão representadas no “Mundial” e a região da África Austral espera ter duas, depois de Angola, África do Sul e Zâmbia terem representado a região no passado.
