SLCC student arrested for carrying gun in firearm-free zone
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A student at South Louisiana Community College has been arrested after carrying a gun on campus, authorities said.
Adrian Harmon, 26, was booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail and charged with one count of possession of a firearm in a firearm free zone.
Just after noon Friday, Lafayette Police responded to the school's campus at 320 Devalcourt St. to a report of a student with a concealed handgun on his person. With the help of campus security and Lafayette Sheriff’s Deputies School Resource Officers, the suspect, Harmon, was located in an upstairs classroom and detained without incident, according to LPD.
Police said there is no evidence that Harmon intended to cause harm with his weapon.
Investigators said that due to his vehicle previously being burglarized he did not want to leave an unattended firearm inside his vehicle, so he brought it inside with him.
No students or staff were harmed during the incident, authorities said.
