BBC chaos as tonight’s EastEnders is UNCANCELLED after major blunder

EASTENDERS will air tonight amid a major blunder at the BBC.

It was originally revealed two weeks ago that the BBC soap would be pushed back by 24 hours as part of an abrupt schedule change.

The soap was moved from its regular Thursday slot to Friday at 7:30pm due to the BBC securing an interview with former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, set to be hosted by Laura Kuenssberg.

However, in a last-minute schedule change, the Beeb have now confirmed that EastEnders will go ahead tonight as usual.

It comes after the broadcaster was forced to axe their major interview due to an “embarrassing” blunder on host Laura’s behalf.

The broadcaster was forced to abandon its plans with just 24 hours to go after Laura accidentally sent her briefing notes for the interview to Boris himself.

The BBC presenter fessed up to the “embarrassing and disappointing” blunder last night but said “honesty is the best policy”.

She had been due to grill the former Prime Minister, who is doing a series of rare sit-downs to mark the release of his memoir, Unleashed.

In a statement on X last night, Kuenssberg said: “While prepping to interview Boris Johnson tomorrow, by mistake I sent our briefing notes to him in a message meant for my team.

“That obviously means it’s not right for the interview to go ahead.

“It’s very frustrating, and there’s no point pretending it’s anything other than embarrassing and disappointing, as there are plenty of important questions to be asked.

“But red faces aside, honesty is the best policy. See you on Sunday.”

The former BBC Political Editor is a highly-regarded journalist who has presented the flagship Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show for two years.

Her sit-down with Mr Johnson was highly anticipated given some of the startling revelations in his new book chronicling his political career including the three years as PM.

As a result of the interview no longer going ahead, EastEnders viewers will be left delighted that the soap will be going ahead as normal meaning no disruption to the soap schedules.

EastEnders alerted viewers to the change via social media as they shared new posts to mark the last-minute update.

Most complained about soap storylines

Over the years, all three of the main soaps have featured plots that have had even die-hard fans reaching for their phones and laptops so they can get in touch with Ofcom and complain. Here are just some of the most scandalous…

  • EastEnders baby theft: 13,400 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2011, EastEnders was flooded with complaints when Ronnie Branning (RIP) swapped her baby for the dead son of Kat Moon. The storyline drew the most number of objections in the soap’s long history and saw it roundly criticised by campaigners – with 13,400 flying in over the course of the storyline. Some viewers called it “distressing” and “horrific” but Ofcom ruled the scenes were not “unduly disturbing”.
  • Emmerdale dog-napping: 550 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2016, Ross Barton and Charity Dingle came up with a plan to steal a dog and hold it ransom – but viewers didn’t like it one bit. The nation’s pet owners rose up, insisting the storyline would encourage copycats (not to mention copydogs). Complaints over two episodes totalled a staggering 550 and soap writers quickly learnt you don’t mess with animal-lovers.
  • Coronation Street double murder: 546 Ofcom complaints – Marginally less people complained about a gruesome double murder than objected to a dog-napping plot when Pat Phelan was at the centre of a spate of killings. First he forced Andy Carver to shoot dead Vinny Ashford – and then Pat killed Andy. All the bloodshed back in 2017 proved to be too much for some viewers, who lodged complaints in vast numbers about the “violent scenes”.
