Keren Decker appointed as US lead for Afghanistan foreign policy

Keren Decker, the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, has been appointed to advance U.S. foreign policy in Afghanistan. On Thursday, October 3, in a meeting with Afghan media editors, Ms. Decker explained her work priorities.

Ms. Decker stated that the departure of Thomas West, the Special Representative for Afghanistan, will not change U.S. policy toward Afghanistan.

In today’s meeting, Ms. Decker told reporters, “I have been asked to take on the responsibilities of the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan.”

Thomas West, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, stepped down this week after three years in the role. The U.S. State Department has announced that West will continue his work in the department’s sanctions division.

The U.S. Chargé d’Affaires for Afghanistan explained her priorities during the meeting: “It is my great responsibility to be the voice of Afghans who have been deprived of their right to free expression.”

She also emphasized that “Afghanistan’s future must be determined through a process led by Afghans.”

Ms. Decker mentioned that since the fall of the republic, the United States has provided $2.3 billion in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.

She also noted that the United Nations will soon review the results of two economic and drug-related groups from “Doha 3,” and the next major Doha meeting will also take place.

It is worth noting that Thomas West, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, was recently removed from his position, and the U.S. State Department has announced that Keren Decker, Rina Amiri, and another department official will take over his responsibilities.
