Chicago police officer and civilian shot in Englewood

0

A Chicago police officer and another person have been shot and suffered non life-threatening injuries Thursday afternoon in Englewood, according to officials and sources.

It remained unclear how the shootings unfolded as reporters waited for official word from police brass.

The attack happened near the 5600 block of South Shields Avenue, according to Chicago fire department spokesman Larry Langford.

According to sources, the male officer was shot in the leg and another officer applied a tourniquet as his partners rushed him in a police car to the University of Chicago Hospital.

The other person, a male who was shot in the groin area, was also arrested, sources said. He was taken by fire department ambulance to Stroger Hospital, where his condition as of 2 p.m. had "stabilized," Langford said.

Both were alive and talking, according to sources, who added neither appeared to suffer life-threatening injuries.

Dozens of patrol officers and detectives remained on the scene when the shooting happened.

Meanwhile, about a dozen people who appear to be police supervisors and other officers stood by outside the ambulance bay at the University of Chicago Hospital.

About 2:40 p.m., Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling stepped out of an SUV and began talking to an officer at the scene. Snelling then entered a large white command vehicle.
