Israel Claims 5,000 Gaza Tunnels destroyed in past year

Israel, on the anniversary of the October 7th attacks, announced that over the past year, it has discovered 4,700 tunnels in the Gaza Strip and targeted a total of 40,300 Hamas positions in Gaza.

In a report released this morning, Monday, October 7), Israel claimed that since the attacks on October 7, 2023, 17,000 members of the Hamas group and 800 Hezbollah members in Lebanon have been killed.

According to the report, at least 8 senior Hamas leaders, 30 commanders of the Qassam Brigades (Hamas’s military wing), and 165 deputy commanders of Hamas have been killed over the past year.

The Israeli army also stated that it has targeted a total of 11,000 Hezbollah positions in Lebanon over the past year, resulting in the deaths of 800 Hezbollah members, including 90 commanders of the militia group.

Hamas and Hezbollah have yet to comment on Israel’s report, nor have they released their own accounts of the attacks over the past year.

While Israel claims to have killed 17,000 Hamas members in its operations, the most recent statistics from the Hamas Health Ministry indicate that 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza over the past year.

The ongoing conflict has led to substantial loss of life on both sides, raising concerns about the long-term prospects for peace and stability in the region. The discrepancy in casualty numbers reported by the two sides underscores the deepening narrative divide, making reconciliation efforts more challenging.
