Albany school zone cameras to start ticketing speeders

0

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Albany's first school zone speed cameras were activated on September 6 to enforce the 20 miles per hour speed limit. For the first 30 days, the cameras were only giving warnings, but as of Monday, the cameras will begin issuing tickets in school zones.

The school zones where tickets will be issued include Albany High School, Eagle Point Elementary, and All Saints Academy. At Albany School for Humanities, the school zone speed cameras will begin issuing tickets on Thursday, October 10.

The fine for school zone speeding when ticketed by the camera is $50, which is less than a speeding ticket issued in person by a police officer. According to New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, a driver who is ticketed by a police officer for speeding in a school zone will be assessed a fine between $90 and $1,200 or possible imprisonment, based on the severity of the act.
