Mary Trump: Uncle is ‘out of his depth' with ‘potentially several undiagnosed disorders’

Mary Trump, a clinical psychologist and niece of Donald Trump, told MSNBC Monday night that her uncle is “on a cognitive decline” because of his decadeslong psychiatric disorders that have gone undiagnosed – and which she suggested may include “an undiagnosed learning disorder.”

Speaking out about a New York Times analysis raising questions about the former president’s rambling speeches, Trump maintained that her uncle is a “deeply unhealthy person” who has been “entirely out of his depth” since winning the presidency in 2016. She added that her uncle is under an extraordinary amount of pressure and stress, which she said could add to his “potentially several undiagnosed personality disorders.”

“This is not a question of aging,” she told host Lawrence O’Donnell on his show “The Last Word” Monday night. “This is a question of cognitive decline that may indeed be related to some kind of cognitive issues Donald is suffering from. It may be because of his decadeslong, very serious psychiatric disorders that have gone undiagnosed and untreated.”

Mary Trump, author of “Who Could Ever Love You,” a New York Times bestseller, added that her uncle is “feeling out of control” and should be further analyzed by medical professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, neuropsychologists and gerontologists to help better understand his behaviors.

“We don't know because one thing this article also doesn't do is speak to experts on the topic. So we really need a broader discussion,” she said. “Because there is so much at stake and because there is so much going on. What is a function of normal aging?”

She added: "A lot of what was discussed in this article does not seem to me to be part of normal aging."
