Talented wrestler with young son killed in Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A talented wrestler with a young son was identified as the man shot to death in a downtown Portland parking lot in the early hours of Sunday.
Lee A. Mauras was killed around 2:30 a.m. that day in the area around West Burnside and SW 3rd Avenue. When police arrived, the 22-year-old was already dead.
His brother, Jovan Mauras, told KOIN 6 News Lee had just committed to the wrestling program at Clackamas Community College.
"I don’t want him to be remembered just for wrestling. He was so much more than that," Jovan said. "He was a loving, kind person and he’d give the shirt off his back to anybody that needed it."
Lee was from New York, where he was a well accomplished athlete and represented Puerto Rico at a major wrestling event earlier this year.
In a statement to KOIN 6 News, Clackamas Community College Head Wrestling Coach Brett Sanchez said Lee Mauras "was a determined and confident young man."
Sanchez said Mauras "aimed to become a National Champion for Clackamas, help his team achieve the National Team Championship, and eventually become a World Champion and an Olympic Champion."
"While Lee set impressive goals for himself, his ultimate motivation was to be a great role model and someone his son, LJ, could look up to and be proud of," Sanchez said. "He was determined to earn his degree, become a champion, and grow into the best version of himself, ultimately aiming to be a full-time dad for his son."
He added the Clackamas wrestling team will honor Lee's memory all season.
No one has yet been arrested in connection with the killing. Investigators said the case remains open and active.
