Templegate’s Cesarewitch Handicap runner-by-runner guide
QUEENSTOWN
TOWN, but not out. You don’t get many Aidan O’Brien runners in handicaps and this son of Galileo found the ground too quick when 17th in the Ebor.
He went close in a Group 3 at Leopardstown before that and these easier conditions will suit.
Has lots of weight but could run into the extra places most bookies offer.
SAMUI
MU won’t do. Has some decent form around two miles including when second in good company at York in August.
Was outclassed in a Listed contest here last time and is 16lb higher than his latest win. Needs a fair bit more.
DAWN RISING
DAWN raid. Carries the JP McManus colours sported by last year’s winner and ran well when fifth in the Irish version of this race at The Curragh 13 days ago.
Up just 2lb for that on ground that suits. Should be in the first six or seven for Joseph O’Brien.
ROBERTO ESCOBARR
ROB won’t nick this. A classy stayer on his day but his day was a fair while ago and he’s been battered on all three starts since joining Ian Williams. Still high in the weights too.
RUN FOR OSCAR
OSCAR nominated. Took this two years ago when landing a big gamble but hasn’t won on the Flat since. He has been in decent form over hurdles though and trainer Charles Byrnes will have him tuned up for this.
THE SHUNTER
SHUNT in the hunt. Won this last year for Emmet Mullins and JP McManus and is just 5lb higher. He hasn’t run on the Flat since but has gone well fresh and can go close again.
MAGELLAN STRAIT
STRAIT away. Won the Irish version of this in a mudbath two years ago but has been out of sorts on the level for a long time.
He was 28th trying to defend his Curragh crown last time and he needs a major bounce back to figure.
SEA OF SANDS
SHIFTING Sands. Willie Mullins has won this three times since 2018 and the bookies fear this German import.
A Group 3 winner in his native land he had an easy Listowel maiden win on debut for the champion jumps trainer.
Not the ordinary prep but Mullins is no ordinary trainer and the booking of William Buick is a plus.
TROOPER BISDEE
WON’T do the Bis. Sir Mark Prescott is a past master with stayers but has never won this race. His runner stays — and the yard is in form — but he won’t be breaking Sir Mark’s duck.
NDAAWI
HERE Wi go. He was an excellent second in the Galway Hurdle last time in August and wasn’t disgraced in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting. On a fair weight for shrewd Gordon Elliott.
EVALUATION
EV needs revs. He has some decent form around two miles on the all-weather and found 1m6f much too short at Doncaster last time. We know he stays but he looks short of this standard.
SPIRIT MIXER
STRONG Spirit. Has won his past two nicely at Chester for Andrew Balding, including in soft last month. He has a 7lb penalty but is open to improvement, even at six years old. Must be in the Mix.
AQWAAM
WAAM bam, no thank you ma’am. Good effort in the Chester Cup but he’s been off since May. Not for me, but comes from a very canny trainer so watch the betting.
SIXANDAHALF
NO Half measure. Gavin Cromwell’s lightly-raced stayer was an excellent third in the Irish version of this last time when trying to make all.
She boxed on well when headed and slightly more patient tactics can pay dividends in ideal conditions.
ZEALANDIA
ALL at Zea. Stays this trip well enough — but in his own time. Needs a big personal best.
ALPHONSE LE GRANDE
GRANDE chance. Was in cracking form earlier this year with three wuns and wasn’t disgraced in the Irish version of this race last time. Has gone up weights but has place squeak.
SHAGPYLE
PYLE not the pick. Didn’t come close to staying this trip when last in the trial for this race and hard to fancy.
MANXMAN
MAN of the hour. Reliable stayer who scored on the sand last time but likes turf too. Is still improving as four-year-old and a 4lb rise looks fair. Another for the each-way shortlist.
ANNA BUNINA
ANNA panner. Hasn’t won for more than two years and recent hurdles form has been poor. Low weight but still hard to fancy.
PREMIERE LIGNE
LIGNE drive. Second in the trial for this and back off the same mark. Was a cracking second in a big handicap at Goodwood and a repeat of that would take him into the places.
BASHFUL BOY
NO Boy. Been struggling over hurdles and not up to this.
JACOVEC CAVERN
CAVERN rocking. Ran a cracker from off the pace when second at Galway last time out in July and stays well on any ground.
From canny trainer and looks on a fair mark. Must go close for Favourite columnist Hayley Turner.
STORY HORSE
FAIRY Story. Didn’t stay in the trial last time and best form around 1m4f. Hard to fancy.
REVEREND HUBERT
REVEREND has a prayer. Good chaser from canny Charles Byrnes yard. He hasn’t won on the Flat for two years but stays well so watch for a market move.
LADY PERCIVAL
NOT my Lady. Fair fourth in a minor contest at Kempton but has more on her plate here — and not a certain stayer.
