New design concepts unveiled for Brooklyn-Queens Expressway
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway has been getting an overhaul, and plans are underway to enhance its design along the busy highway.
The New York City Department of Transportation unveiled new detailed concepts in a new report on Thursday.
“This report presents design concepts, including streetscape improvements, intersection redesigns, repurposed space under the highway, and public spaces on local streets and over the highway trenches along BQE North and South," read an entry in the 154-page plan. “These design concepts incorporate community input and reflect an overarching vision for BQE North and South that enables community members along the BQE corridor to access jobs, healthcare, educational and cultural institutions, and recreational destinations more safely and comfortably."
The redesign aims to beautify parts of Brooklyn with green spaces and to provide greater access for pedestrians and cyclists. The plan also includes new spaces above the highway, including pedestrian bridges and public spaces that could be used as seasonal outdoor venues.
