Afghan worker dies from gas poisoning in Tehran well
Two Afghan workers, aged 35 and 40, were trapped in a 35-meter-deep well in southeastern Tehran, resulting in one of them losing his life. The Tehran Fire Department stated that a gas leak at the bottom of the well likely caused the workers’ gas poisoning.
According to reports from the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Friday, October 11, the 40-year-old worker became poisoned after entering the well to assist his colleague.
Witnesses reported that both workers were trapped in the well but were later rescued by the fire department.
The Tehran Fire Department confirmed that one of the workers died in the well, while the other was injured. Jalal Maleki, a spokesperson for the Tehran Fire Department, stated that forensic authorities would determine the cause of the Afghan worker’s death, but it was likely due to gas poisoning from the leak.
This incident comes shortly after the Tehran Fire Department reported the death of a 70-year-old Afghan worker who fell into a well in southern Tehran.
Many Afghan workers have fled to Iran due to the economic collapse in Afghanistan and restrictions imposed by the Taliban. Lacking residency documents and legal work permits, these workers are often forced to accept low-paying and dangerous jobs in construction, agriculture, and services.
As a result, they are exposed to hazardous working conditions, putting them at risk of injury and exploitation.
The tragic incidents involving Afghan workers in Iran highlight the urgent need for improved safety regulations and protections for migrant laborers. Addressing their precarious status and ensuring access to legal employment opportunities can help mitigate their risks and contribute to their overall well-being in a foreign land.
