A 3-goal second period from the Okotoks Oilers was too much to overcome as the Prince George Spruce Kings fell 6-3 on Friday in Alberta.
The Spruce Kings got on the board first in the opening frame, as Ethan Montroy scored in his third straight game, grabbing his fifth goal on the power play as he poked one over the line off an Evan Bellamy point shot. Skogen Schrott drew the second assist.
Just 1:21 later, Logan Broten’s point shot beat Carter Wishart, assisted by Ryder de Nys.
At the 17:30 mark, Otto Hanson walked into the zone and received the puck from Michael Kowalski and went bar down behind Wishart to open up a 2-1 lead. Cyle Clayton picked up the other helper.
In the second period, Trent Ballentyne got the Spruce Kings even on a goal from Linden Makow and Ty Paisley. He snapped one past the Oilers netminder off the rush as Makow poked it to him off the pass from Paisley.
At the end of a long shift, the Spruce Kings turned the puck over at centre and de Nys slid it under Wishart for the Oilers to take the lead at 13:44.
In the next 4:18, they would score twice more as Joseph Meridith and Hanson (2nd of the night) stretched the lead to 5-2.
The Spruce Kings got within two at 10:56 as Cooper Williams scored his 4th of the year from Vital Dinis.
Moments later, Carter Hesselgrave appeared to have scored but it was waved off on the ice. After video review, they could not determine the location of the puck from the centre ice cam, and did not have an overhead view, so it remained 5-3.
Jackson Rowland scored into the empty net at 19:20 to put the finishing touches on the 6-3 Okotoks victory.
