Premier League winner saw Micky Van de Ven doing something weird vs Brighton
Former Chelsea defender, Gary Cahill, has pointed out an unusual aspect of Micky Van de Ven’s game that he kept doing against Brighton, labelling it as ‘negative’.
Van De Ven has flourished at Tottenham
Since joining from Wolfsburg for £43 million in August of 2023, Micky Van de Ven – when fit – has been one of Tottenham’s most impressive performers. The Dutchman’s lightning pace and physicality offer Spurs a different aspect to their defence. (Sky Sports)
Van de Ven has become notorious for his blistering pace, clocking in at 37.38 km/h, a speed which makes the 23-year-old the quickest-ever Premier League player on record. (Tottenham Hotspur)
However, Micky’s pace couldn’t bail Tottenham out of their embarrassing collapse against Brighton. Gary Cahill suggests that the defender was adopting a ‘negative’ habit which perhaps hampered Spurs from clawing their way back into the match.
Cahill was left bewildered by Van De Ven’s performance
While speaking on the Planet Premier League podcast, Gary Cahill revealed an interesting aspect he noted whilst watching Van De Ven against Brighton.
He said: “Do you know what I noticed in the game, and it was so random. Micky van de Ven, I’m a massive fan of him, I think he’s top draw, but the number of times he passed back to the goalkeeper.
“I was thinking watching it it’s kind of negative playing it back and playing it safe, and he was looking up and there were no options for him. He passed it back what must have been 10 times, and I really like him as well.”
Van De Ven said he felt ‘ill’ after Tottenham’s loss to Brighton
After Tottenham’s sickening loss to Brighton where the likes of Van de Ven collapsed in the second half, shipping three goals in quick succession, the Dutchman himself admitted:
“Things are going well and I think that with Tottenham as a team, we are also playing well and earning more points than we actually have now. I play my matches and do my thing.
“I was quite ill from that. As a team, we had a fantastic first half, led 2-0, but in the end, you lost 3-2. I did speak to Bart (Verbruggen) immediately after the match. He saw that I was very ill from it. Then he is not the person to irritate you with that.” (ESPN)
