Carjacker attacks officers with a knife on the GWB: police
NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- Three officers from the Port Authority Police Department were injured early Sunday morning during an incident with an armed carjacker, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
A joint investigation has been launched into a series of connected events throughout Bergen County, New Jersey, that led up to the attack.
The first incident happened in South Hackensack before 2:34 a.m.
Officials say a stolen vehicle was crashed and abandoned in South Hackensack. The vehicle was later discovered to be stolen out of New York City during an armed carjacking.
Police say the suspect was unsuccessful in trying to steal a nearby vehicle but was able to commit an armed carjacking of an additional vehicle from a nearby business.
The carjacked vehicle was later found disabled on the George Washington Bridge. Port Authority Police officers responded and located the suspect.
The suspect attacked the officers with a knife and tried to steal a police patrol vehicle, officials say. The suspect was arrested and remains in custody pending charges.
Three officers were taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and have been released.
The incidents remain under investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, the South Hackensack Police Department, and the Port Authority Police Department.
