Two stars, two different motivations: Man United poised to make key contract decisions - report
Six Manchester United players – Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo – have less than 12 months left on their contracts.
According to Manchester World, the Red Devils are expected to activate the one-year extension options for Maguire and Diallo.
The same clause is not present in the contracts of the other four players.
Two contract extensions for distinct motivations
United are already in discussions with Diallo about a new long-term contract.
Erik ten Hag has shown faith in the 22-year-old by making him the first-choice right-winger this season.
The youngster has displayed glimpses of his talent but has failed to live up to expectations.
He has bagged only one goal and one assist in ten appearances across all competitions.
Triggering the one-year extension in his contract is a sensible commercial decision if the two sides cannot agree on a long-term deal.
Maguire’s contract extension could be a strategic move to safeguard his resale value.
United should extend his deal by a year and recoup some funds by offloading him next summer. The Red Devils reportedly aim to sell him for £10 million.
United signed him for £80m from Leicester City in 2019. Given his age and contract situation, they may only recover about one-tenth of that transfer fee in 2025.
