Casa Aguilar

0

Casa Aguilar is a minimalist home located in Querétaro, Mexico, designed by Taller Segovia Molina. Casa Aguilar is designed as a private sanctuary for a family, blending introspection with everyday living. Its thick outer walls serve as a protective shell, shielding the home from its densely built surroundings, while inside, natural light filters through patios on all three levels, creating a peaceful and intimate atmosphere. From the outside, the house presents itself as a closed structure with high walls that seem to hover above the ground. The open floor plan allows for the integration of wild gardens, designed to attract local wildlife such as pollinating insects and endemic birds. The house’s almost sealed form opens up only to its internal landscapes, allowing the residents to enjoy the surrounding nature in complete privacy.

The home’s layout prioritizes open spaces, each with a distinct character. On the ground floor, these areas lead from the entrance to the social spaces, where the kitchen and dining room connect to a rear patio that bathes the double-height interiors in light. The textured walls are balanced by the warmth of light-toned carpentry, adding a subtle touch of softness. At the core of the design is the idea of fostering intimacy through a sequence of spatial transitions. Each area flows from dark, enclosed spaces to bright, open ones, offering varied experiences as one moves through the home. This dynamic is felt throughout all three levels, where transitions from confined areas to expansive spaces invite a deeper connection with the natural elements—light, wind, rain, and sky—that frame the living experience.

Private and semi-public spaces include south-facing bedrooms, a north-facing home office, and a ceramics workshop. The workshop, completely open, connects to a terrace with a double-height view, while the office on the top floor links to a smaller terrace, both spaces benefitting from indirect light to create a calm, productive environment. The design culminates in a rooftop garden, offering a meditative space surrounded by vegetation. Maximizing permeable areas, the home achieves an impressive 80% thanks to its terraces and gardens. The public spaces maintain a grand scale while adhering to local building height restrictions by partially burying the ground floor after soil analysis.
