IOM expresses concern over forced deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has expressed concern over the forced deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran, reporting that 60% of all returnees from this country were deported involuntarily.

In a report released on Monday, October 14, the IOM noted an unprecedented rise in the number of Afghan migrants returning to their homeland, both forcibly and voluntarily.

According to the report, 60% of Afghan returnees from Iran were forced to return, while 40% returned voluntarily.

The IOM further stated that from January 2023 to July of this year, at least 1.7 million Afghan migrants have returned from Iran, with the majority being forced returns.

The organization has called for the immediate cessation of forced deportations of Afghan migrants from Iran.

According to the report, 841,521 Afghan returnees from Iran have received assistance from the IOM.

In recent months, there has been an increase in the deportation and return of Afghan migrants from both Iran and Pakistan.

Most recently, Ahmad Reza Radan, the Commander of the Law Enforcement Command of the Islamic Republic of Iran, announced that the country is determined to deport two million “illegal” Afghan migrants.

The ongoing forced deportations of Afghan migrants from neighbouring countries like Iran and Pakistan highlight the severe humanitarian crisis faced by displaced individuals.

With rising numbers of forced returns, international bodies like the IOM urgently call for interventions to protect the rights and well-being of these vulnerable populations.
